Gentiana Sula - Chairman of the Authority for Information on the Documents of the Former State Security

Gentiana Sula has been the Chairman of the Authority for Information on the Former State Security Documents since its establishment in 2017. She served as Deputy Minister of Social Welfare and Youth (MMSR) from October 2013 to February 2016. As a recognized expert in the development of educational systems and the protection of human and children's rights, she was an active participant in the 1990s Student Movement for democracy.

During her mandate at the Ministry of Social Welfare and Youth, Gentiana contributed to reforms in education and employment, aiming to improve the connection between education and the labor market, the organization of vocational trades, and the promotion of employment for disadvantaged groups. Another important area was Transitional Justice, where she promoted policies for the moral and financial rehabilitation of former political prisoners, creating conditions for transparency regarding the crimes of the dictatorship, including the disappeared.

Gentiana represents Albania in the European Network of Remembrance and Solidarity. She has also worked for a long time with the World Bank and UNICEF, where she developed programs for the protection and integration of children deprived of parental care and contributed to educational reforms in Albania, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Uzbekistan, Georgia, and conflict-affected countries such as Yemen.

Gentiana Sula holds a Doctorate in Social Sciences from the Faculty of Social Sciences in Tirana and has completed advanced studies in biology, as well as earned a Master’s degree in Business Administration. She has been honored with the “Golden Gratitude” by the Pan-Albanian Federation of America Vatra, the “Appreciation Award” from the European University of Tirana, and the “Appreciation Award” from the Patriotic Association Çamëria.

Regarding her family history, Mrs. Sula expresses the following:
“My motivation in confronting the past is closely tied to the tragic events of my family’s history. My grandfather, Sulejman Mara, experienced forced displacement, imprisonment, and died in prison at the age of 44, while his body has still not been found. This has deepened my sensitivity toward the lack of protection of human rights and the division of the population along political-ideological lines—a situation that continues to this day.”

My experience in the international arena, working with organizations such as UNICEF and the World Bank, has helped me understand the fundamental importance of protecting human rights and the need for social integration. My family's history is a continuous effort to contribute to a fairer and more equal future for all.
