Excerpt from the testimony of former political convict Ylber Merdani given to AIDSSH.
Ylber Merdani, born on May 28, 1940, in Korçë. In 1965, he was sentenced by the Librazhd court and dismissed from his job as a teacher due to a series of writings considered pessimistic in nature. He continued to write about his experiences. The poem "A Moonlit Farewell," written in 1965 in Stravonjë, was followed by other works composed during his internment in the village of Pulahë in Opar, in 1967. His ideas in writings such as "The Convicted," "Monologue of a Suicide," "The Mountains," "To Sister and Brother on Their Birthday," etc., led to the charge of "agitation and propaganda against the people's power." After internment, he was arrested on June 9, 1969, and by decision of the Korçë District Court, he was sentenced to eight years in Spaç prison, where he also took part in the 1973 revolt.
